C. 9:28-36 THE NATURE OF THE KINGDOM: TRANSFIGURED GLORY

a. 9:28 JESUS BRINGS THREE TO THE TRANSFIGURATION MOUNT

And it came to pass about eight days after these :words,

he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray.

b. 9:29 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF CHRIST

And as he was praying, the fashion of his :countenance was altered,

c. 9:30-31 MOSES AND ELIJAH

And lo, two men talked with him, who were Moses and Elijah;

which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.

d. 9:32 THE THREE SEE THE TRANSFIGURATION

Now :Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep:

but when fully awake, they saw his :glory, and the two men that stood with him.

e. 9:33 PETER'S CONFUSED RESPONSE

And it came to pass, as they were :parting from him,

:Peter said unto :Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here:

and let us make three tents; one for you, and one for Moses,

and one for Elijah: not knowing what he said.

f. 9:34 THE OVERSHADOWING CLOUD

And while he was saying these things, a cloud came and was overshadowing them:

and they were afraid as they :entered into the cloud.

g. 9:35 THE FATHER'S VOICE

kai phoNE eGEne-to ek tes nePHEles, LEgou-sa,

And a voice came out of the cloud, saying,

HOU-TOS es-tin ho huiOS mou, ho e-kle-legMEnos [1588]: auTOU aKOUe-te.

This is my :Son, the chosen: hear HIM.

h. 9:36a And when the voice was past, :Jesus was found alone.

i. 9:36b And THEY were silent, and reported to no one in those :days anything of what they had seen.

D. 9:37-43a DEMONSTRATION OF KINGDOM POWER

a. 9:37 THE CROWD - FOLLOWING MOUNTAIN DESCENT

And it came to pass, on the next day, when they were come down

from the mountain, a great crowd met him.

b. 9:38-39 A FATHER REPORTS ON HIS SON

kai iDOU, aNER aPO tou OCHlou eBOe-sen [995], LEgon, DiDAska-le,

And lo, a man from the crowd shouted, saying, Teacher,

I beseech you to look upon my :son, because he is my only begotten:

39and lo, a spirit takes him, and he suddenly cries out;

and it convulses him with foam,

and it hardly departs from him, bruising him sorely.

c. 9:40 And I besought your :disciples to cast it out; and they could not.

d. 9:41 JESUS' DISAPPOINTMENT - WITH THE NINE

And :Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation,

HEos POte Eso-mai pros huMAS, kai aNExo-mai [430] huMON? proSAga-ge HOde ton huiON sou.

how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? bring here your :son.

e. 9:42a And as he was yet a coming, the demon rent and convulsed him grievously.

f. 9:42b JESUS SOLVES THE PROBLEM

and healed the boy, and gave him back to his :father.

E. 9:43b-50 PRINCIPLES OF THE KINGDOM

1. 9:43b-45 JESUS FORETELLS HIS COMING DEATH THE SECOND TIME

for the Son of :man shall be delivered up into men's hands.

b. 9:45 THE STATE OF THE DISCIPLES

hoi de egNOoun to 'REma TOUto,

But they understood not this saying,

kai en pa-ra-ke-ka-lumMEnon [3871] ap' auTON, HIna me AISthon-tai auTO [143];

and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it;

kai e-phoBOUNto e-roTEsai auTON peRI tou 'REma-tos TOUtou.

and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

2. 9:46-48 PRINCIPLE OF GREATNESS IN THE KINGDOM - HUMILITY

a. 9:46 And a reasoning arose among them, which of them was thegreater.

b. 9:47-48 JESUS ILLUSTRATES TRUE KINGDOM GREATNESS THROUGH A CHILD

But when :Jesus saw the reasoning of their :heart,

e-pi-laBOme-nos paiDIon, ESte-sen auTO par' he-auTO, kai EIpen auTOIS,

he took up a little child, andset him by his side, 48and said to them,

Hos an DExe-tai TOUto to paiDIon ePI to oNOmaTI mou eME DEche-tai:

Whoever shall receive this little :child in my :name receives me:

kai hos an eME DExe-tai DEche-tai ton a-poSTEIlanTA me:

and whoever shall receive me receives him that sent me:

ho gar miKROte-ros [3398] en PAsin huMIN huPARchon, HOU-TOS es-ti MEgas.

for who is lesser among you all, the same is great.

3. 9:49-50 SECTARIANISM REBUKED

a. 9:49 JOHN INFORMS JESUS CONCERNING THEIR ACTION

And John answered andsaid, Master,

EIdaMEN ti-na en to oNOmaTI sou ekBALlon-ta daiMOni-a;

we saw some one casting out demons in your :name;

kai e-koLUo-men [2967] auTON, HOti ouk a-ko-louTHEI meth' huMON.

and we were hindering him, because he follows not with us.

b. 9:50 But :Jesus said unto him, Do not hinder: for who is not against you is for you.

EIpen de pros auTON IeSOUS, Me koLUe-te: hos gar ouk EStin kath' huMON huPER huMON esTIN.

NOTE: (2010-11-26) - 9:28-36 - The Transfiguration. This is the third of the great manifestations in the earthly life of God's Son, the Messiah, the Christ. He came to die for us above all else; so the fourth event in His Life: His Passion, is the Key. Paul preached Him as Christ crucified, and then all the other events fall into their place.

However, the Transfiguration of Jesus at this time is of great importance for us. Moses and Elijah were present for this. Moses was not allowed to enter the land until now, 1400 years later. Jesus is here seen in Kingdom Glory, as He is nowas the first one in a glorified human body, the glorified Son of :man! And it is at this event, that the Father from heaven witnessed in one of His three times concerning His great pleasure in His Son! Jesus' three disciples who He brought as witnesses to accompany Him, had fear, awe and silence concerning this - until after the Cross and Resurrection. And we must not forget His Ascension, nor the giving of the Holy Spirit, a result of His Passion.

9:37-43a - Much to meditate upon here!

9:43b-50 - George Muller from among many disciples, showed forth the humility of a little child in a superior manner. The 12 apostles prior to Pentecost - showed little of this beautiful child-like spirit, that Jesus sets forth as of such high value. Not childish - but child-like, as Jesus sees it. J.A.W.
